What is traceroute?

Traceroute raises the packet’s lifetime (TTL) one step at a time so that every router on the way reveals itself. That tells you which hops the packet crosses and how many ms it takes to reach each.

Silent hops

A hop shown as * * * did not reply. If later hops do reply, the path is healthy; that one device simply does not answer ICMP.

Pingu sends three probes per hop and shows at most 20 hops.
